Nucleu 0010. Inopportune Encounters 01

“Nucleu 0010. Inopportune Encounters,” the first exhibition, launched a series of collaborations between artists from the Nucleu group and those with studios provided by the Union of Visual Artists from Romania (UAPR), drawing attention to the critical need for affordable studios for artists.

The Nucleu 0000 Association visited artist studios on Piața Amzei and Șelari Streets, inviting four young artists without studios—Roberta Curcă, Alexandra Ivanciu, Diana Miron, and Marina Oprea—to collaborate with established artists who have received studios from UAPR: Nicolae Comănescu, Anca Mureșan, Beniamin Popescu, and Elena Scutaru. The resulting exhibition featured new works created through a collaborative artistic research process rooted in mutual understanding, experimentation, and exchange among the four artist teams and took place at Atelier 35 in Bucharest, an artist-run space coordinated by UAPR, dedicated to showcasing emerging artists under 35.

Centered around the notion of the studio, the “Inopportune Encounters” project created a space for creative dialogue and community-building while highlighting pressing issues in the local art scene. The studio is a vital space for artistic creation—a retreat from the outside world where artists can freely experiment, build, destroy, and start over without fear of judgment.

Inter-Exterior in-situ intervention

The second component of the “Inter-Exterior” project involved an in-situ intervention at one of the studio buildings on 7-9 Biserica Amzei Street in Bucharest. Artists were invited to explore and engage with the building’s hallways, inner courtyard, and basement, integrating their works into the site’s concrete, moisture, and rust during the White Night of the Galleries 2022. The exhibition remained open for visits on the following Saturday and Sunday, alongside the opening of the artists’ studios in the building.

The UAPR buildings, scattered throughout central Bucharest, house dozens of studios with artists of varying ages, reputations, and practices. Although these creative spaces in heritage buildings and historic areas are deeply embedded in the collective psyche of art professionals (through curiosity, desire, or rumor), they are rarely accessible, even to specialists, let alone the general public. The “Inter-Exterior” brought into the spotlight the significance of the artist’s studio in the creative process and stimulated conversation around its critical role in artistic development.
